Is it one of those shitty ones where you have to open the trunk to change your CD?

No
Well... it doesn’t actually work... and hasn’t for the past 5+ years, but still.

The fact that it still works is the fantastic part.

I had a Blaupunkt in my 280Z that had the same mechanism. That sentence really dates me lol. I remember it being very expensive because it was single din that had a 3 disc changer. The cartridge would hit the shifter and pop it out of gear if you weren’t paying attention.

Even in park this one doesn’t hit the shifter. But I’m not so sure about the manual version.

Here is a view from a 280zx. The car was pre-DIN, a dash insert is needed, and there is not a bunch of room behind it. That Blaupunkt was deeper than most on top of it all. All I would have to do is push the shifter over a little while still in gear and the cartridge would clear. It’s what you lived with in the mid 90's though.

That’s an Alpine CD mechanism. I was working there when they were selling these.
all I can say about CD changers is “good f**king riddance.”
